We recommend packing all liquids, gels, and aerosols that are over 3.4 oz or 100 ml in your checked baggage, even if they are in a secure, tamper-evident bag.

  • The Art of Compression: Master the art of packing cubes and compression bags to fit more into your carry-on. Who knew you could fit a week’s worth of clothes into a bag the size of a toaster?
  • Essentials and Valuables: Store cash, laptops, cameras, valuable jewelry, and a change of clothes in your carry-on. Unfortunately, suitcases do go missing or do not arrive at the same time as you. So why take the risk?
  • Keep Your Loose Items in One Place: Electronics, cables, phone chargers, camera chargers, headphones, car keys, house keys, medication, bobby pins… and the list of awkward small items goes on. Categorise these items accordingly and place them into zip-lock bags or travel pouches. This will keep your suitcase tidy and you’ll be able to reach for that awkward tiny item within seconds instead of tipping your suitcase upside down for it.
  • Roll, Not Fold: To save space and stop creasing, roll your clothes instead of folding them. This will keep your holiday outfits crease-free. For extreme space saving, you can purchase vacuum compression bags.
  • Pack Items You Use Often at the Top: Pack your daily essentials such as toiletries and phone chargers last so they are on the top of your suitcase. Making them easy to reach when you need them without having to strewn your entire suitcase content onto the floor.
  • Pack Plastic Bags: Pack extra plastic bags in the front zip of your suitcase. You’ll need them to store your dirty laundry as you enjoy your holiday. You’ll thank us when you’re sorting out your washing post-holiday.
General Tips:
  • Pre-Trip Checklist: Have a pre-trip checklist or use one that we have prepared earlier. Start writing down what you need to do and pack for your holiday a month before you are due to depart. This list will give you peace of mind on what to do and pack, which will be full of your holiday essentials and personal items. Start ticking each item on the list as your departure time approaches.
  • Shoes: No matter how many pairs of shoes you are packing for your holiday, always pack them at the bottom of the suitcase in a plastic carrier bag or invest in a waterproof shoe bag. This will keep the rest of your suitcase clean and smelling fresh. Also, have a good think about the shoes you're bringing along, it's not worth taking shoes that go with one outfit, unless that's what your trip is for, but try pick shoes to bring that are versatile and match most of your outfits, this will save you so much space.

Imagine my surprise when, in the middle of summer, I found myself shivering in the freezing cold!   • Check the Forecast: Look up the weather forecast for your destination during your travel dates. Is it going to be hot, cold, rainy, or humid? Knowing this will help you pack the right types of clothing.
  • Seasonal Considerations: Pack light, breathable fabrics for hot climates, such as cotton or linen, and warm, layered clothing for colder destinations, such as wool or fleece. Don’t forget waterproof items for rainy seasons.
Layering is Key:
  • Versatility: Layering is a great strategy to adapt to changing weather conditions. A lightweight jacket or cardigan can be easily added or removed to stay comfortable.
  • Space Saving: Layers take up less space and allow for more outfit combinations. A base layer, mid-layer, and outer layer can be mixed and matched for various temperatures.

  • Tropical Destinations: For hot and humid climates, pack moisture-wicking clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen. Lightweight and quick-dry fabrics are ideal.

Some Orthodox churches have garments you can wear over short skirts and some Mosques offer the same for people wearing shorts, but it's not everywhere. So research what’s considered appropriate attire to avoid offending locals and to be respectful of their customs.
  • Specific Guidelines: Some cultures have specific dress codes for men and women. For instance, in many Middle Eastern countries, women are expected to cover their shoulders and knees, and sometimes wear a light headscarf.
  • Adaptability: Pack a versatile scarf or shawl. It can be used to cover your head or shoulders when necessary and can also serve as a stylish accessory.
Practical Considerations:
  • Comfort and Respect: Choose clothing that is comfortable for you but also respects the local culture. Avoid clothing with offensive symbols or language.

  • Essential Toiletries: Pack only the essentials: toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and moisturiser. Consider solid versions of some items, like shampoo bars, to avoid liquid restrictions.
  • Multi-Use Products: Opt for multi-use products to save space. For instance, a moisturiser with SPF can serve as both sunscreen and daily lotion.
  • Leak-Proof Bags: Use leak-proof bags or pouches to contain any potential spills. Nothing ruins a day like opening your suitcase to find shampoo all over your clothes.
  • Local Purchases: Don’t stress about packing everything. Many destinations have local shops where you can purchase toiletries, often cheaper and more tailored to the climate.

Health & Medication

  • Medications: Pack essential medications in their original containers, along with copies of your prescriptions. This is crucial for avoiding issues at customs and for accessing your medication in case of an emergency.
  • First Aid Kit: Assemble a compact first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any other personal necessities.
  • Vaccinations and Documentation: Ensure you have necessary vaccinations for your destination. Carry documentation of your vaccinations, especially for countries with entry requirements.
  • Local Health Regulations: Research the local health regulations and available medical facilities. Knowing where the nearest hospital or clinic is can be a lifesaver.
  • Hydration and Nutrition: Stay hydrated and maintain your nutrition. Carry a reusable water bottle with a filter and pack some healthy snacks to keep your energy levels up.

  • Carry-On Packing: Always pack essential electronics like phones, chargers, cameras, and laptops in your carry-on bag. This ensures they’re safe from rough handling and readily available when needed.
  • Travel Apps: Download useful travel apps before you leave. Apps for maps, translations, currency conversion, and transportation can be lifesavers.
  • Offline Maps: Save maps for offline use. Google Maps allows you to download maps for areas where you might not have reliable internet access.
  • Universal Adapter: Invest in a universal travel adapter with USB ports. This will keep all your devices charged regardless of the country’s outlet type.
  • Protective Cases: Use protective cases for your devices to safeguard against drops and spills. Waterproof cases are a bonus for beach or water-related trips.

Travel Documents

  • Essentials: Ensure you have your passport, visas, travel insurance documents, and any other necessary identification. Check expiration dates well in advance of your trip.
  • Photocopies: Keep photocopies of your important documents in a separate location from the originals. Additionally, store digital backups in a secure cloud service. In some countries, I would leave my passport in the hotel safe and carry a photocopy around with me. Also take a photocopy of your hotel address, just in case your phone battery dies and you didn't have a chance to bring a backup charger.
  • Organisation: Use a travel wallet or document organiser to keep everything in one place. This makes it easy to find what you need quickly.
  • Emergency Contacts: Write down important contact numbers, including your country’s embassy, local emergency services, and family or friends back home.

  • Local Laws and Customs: Familiarise yourself with the local laws and customs. Respecting local practices can prevent misunderstandings and keep you out of trouble.

COVID-19 Safety

Even though Covid is a thing of the past, it might be worth carrying a few safety goodies to protect yourself.
  • Face Masks and Sanitiser: Pack plenty of face masks and hand sanitiser. Use them consistently in crowded public places and public transport.
  • Vaccination Proof: Carry proof of vaccination or negative test results as required by your destination. Keep both digital and hard copies.
  • Health Monitoring: Monitor your health and be aware of the symptoms of COVID-19. Have a plan for seeking medical attention if you start to feel unwell. Take a Rapid Antigen Test kit along on your travels.

Pre-Travel Tips

  • Inform Your Bank: Notify your bank of your travel plans to prevent your cards from being flagged for unusual activity. Banks like Westpac and NAB allow you to list each country you'll visit.
  • Exchange Currency: Get some local currency before you leave. It’s useful for small purchases and emergencies upon arrival.
  • Register Your Trip: Register your trip with relevant authorities. This can provide extra support and information in case of emergencies.
  • Secure Your Home: Arrange for someone to check on your home, stop mail delivery, and ensure everything is locked up and secure.
  • Itinerary Double-Check: Double-check your itinerary and transportation details. Confirm flight times, hotel reservations, and any other bookings.
  • Packing Review: Do a final review of your packing list. Ensure you have everything you need and nothing you don’t.
